chocolat
joanne harris

With fewer stereotypes, more satisfyingly complex characters, and a less wrapped-up-happily-with-a-bow ending than the popular movie, this book is ambiguous, beautiful, and satisfying. I only wish the people who adapted it for the screen had given the excellent, skilled cast a chance to fully realize the characters and the story. While I enjoyed the movie, it is in many ways saccharine and simplistic in comparison
